What is an isolator? RF isolator is a dual port ferromagnetic passive device, which is used to protect other RF components from being damaged by too strong signal reflection. Isolators are common in laboratory applications and can separate the equipment under test (DUT) from sensitive signal sources.The difference between isolator and circulator The circulator is a multi port device that transmits the incident wave entering any port into the next port according to the direction determined by the static bias magnetic field. The prominent feature is the unidirectional transmission of energy, which controls the transmission of electromagnetic waves along a circular direction. For example, in the circulator in the figure below, the signal can only be from port 1 to port 2, from port 2 to port 3, and from port 3 to port 1, and other paths are blocked (high isolation) The isolator is generally based on the structure of the circulator. The only difference is that the isolator is usually a two port device, which connects the three ports of the circulator to the matching load or detection circuit. Thus, such a function is formed: the signal can only go from port 1 to port 2, but can not return to port 1 from port 2, that is, one-way continuity is realized. If the 3-port is connected to the detector, the mismatch degree of the terminal device terminated by the 2-port can also be realized, and the standing wave monitoring function can be realized.10 Main indicators
